Expert Hints and Tips

Hints for Mums

Before you start a feed, set up the environment so that your older child can be near you, playing with her toys and interacting gently with you. Be available to talk, invent a story or even sing!

Hints for Dads

Don’t be afraid to touch and carry your baby.
Children are relatively rugged – not as tough as a rugby ball, but not as fragile as a Flake bar. If you support your baby’s head, you’re probably doing okay.

Hints for Grandparents/Caregivers

You probably have some great advice and some wisdom that you have accumulated. Wait until it is sought out – rather than offer it too freely. Your children may need your help but will take it on board more readily if they have asked for it.

Stages of Development Hints

Any time from three months on, your baby will start reaching out to clasp an object and pull it to himself. Now you can begin to hold a simple rattle in front of your little one and patiently wait for him to bring his hands together to hold it. The next natural progression is for everything he can hold to go into his mouth.

General Hints

Don’t over commit yourself in the weeks before and after the birth. Give your growing family the time and space to take things easily
